The Lady Cavs field hockey team lost in the first round of the 5A region playoffs against Cox last Friday, 7-0.

PA had won one of the last official spots for the playoffs after a double-overtime victory over Norview, 2-1.

The game against Norview was to determine which teams would hold the seventh and eighth spots for the playoffs.

“Going into [the Norview] game we were pretty confident that we would win… we knew we had to win,” said junior center mid Madi San Diego.

However, right within the first 10 minutes of the game, Norview scored. “We were on offense basically the entirety of the game,” said San Diego. “We just couldn’t score any of the opportunities that we had.”

“We kept the score 1-0 through the regulation time,” said junior Grace Carpenter.

In the last minute of the game, freshman Erika Wu scored making the score 1-1. The game then went into overtime.

Neither of the teams scored during the first overtime, so the game went into double overtime.

The intensity and suspense began to build. “We got a short corner, and Madi inserted and Kylie [Wheeler] took a shot,” said Carpenter. “Madi tipped it in and we won.” The girls won with 11 minutes left on the clock.

“We got mercy ruled by them during the regular season,” said San Diego. “We had to try our best because they’re just such an amazing team.

In the following playoff game, Cox scored on PA early, and continued to score throughout the duration of the game.

The girls fought a physical game, and junior goalie Caroline Gilman had numerous saves. .

“The Cox game was my favorite game of the season,” said Carpenter, as PA reached the playoffs for the first time in several years.

The team’s final record was 10-7.
