Welcome back to It’s Time to Celebrate! April is always a special month for me, usually with spring in full swing and the school year coming to an end. But it is most special because April is the month of my birthday!
My birthday was last Tuesday, April 9, and I turned 17! It was actually a very unique birthday for me because I (sadly) had to go to school on my birthday! As I talked about in my last column, Easter was earlier than usual this year, being in March, and if you remember back in August, school started a week earlier this year. Both of these I think have contributed to Spring Break being a week(ish) earlier. So usually when my birthday would be over Spring Break, it was during school.
While I know I can’t really complain because most people usually have their birthdays on a school day, it’s always been nice to have a long break around my birthday. Usually, my family and I go somewhere by the beach during the break and I am able to do whatever I want, like being able to sleep in.
One of my most memorable (and weirdest) birthdays was my 13th birthday in 2020. My family and I were almost a month into quarantine and we hadn’t seen anyone else for a long time. I did get some kind of a birthday celebration though as my friends and family in the neighborhood came by in a car parade with posters and decorations, wishing me happy birthday.
Besides my kind-of-strange birthday during Covid, I have had a lot of great birthdays in my childhood, like going to the Aquarium or getting frozen yogurt. As I’ve gotten older though, I’ve really stopped having parties and instead just gone out to dinner or hung out with friends.
Something I’ve noticed as I and others my age have gotten older is that people either stop caring about their birthdays or they make an even bigger deal about it than when they were young. While I’ve kind of stopped caring about my birthday, I understand people who want to make a big deal about it because it’s your one day a year!
While I think many people celebrate like I do, I would love to know how you celebrate your birthday and if there are any special traditions that you do. Please comment below to let me know and thank you for reading!
