Lil Tecca is a 22-year-old American rapper and singer-songwriter from Queens, New York. Tecca has dropped five studio albums since 2019, when he introduced us to his underrated songwriting and his incredible rapping ability with his debut album ‘We Love You Tecca.’ His career took off with his smash hit “Ransom,” which is still one of his most popular songs to this day.
Since he released his first album, he has averaged 20.3 million monthly listeners and over 10 billion streams on Spotify over his five-year career. His next two albums ‘Virgo World’ and ‘We Love You Tecca 2’ continued his rise to fame, accumulating just over 1.8 billion streams on Spotify across both those albums.
On September 20th, Lil Tecca released his fifth album called ‘Plan A.’ This album included hits such as “Bad Time,” “120,” “Number 2,” and “Flowers.” Just a day after he released the album, he dropped a music video for “120” which amassed just under 500k views on YouTube. But unlike his other albums, ‘Plan A’ only incorporates one feature – with rapper Don Toliver. Their song is called ‘I Can’t Let Go’ and is highly regarded as the best song on the album. His last album ‘TEC’ propelled his career to the next level with collaborations like this with Ken Carson and Kodak Black. His collaborations and projects have generally increased in quality throughout his time in music.
Throughout the music side of social media, there have been arguments comparing rapper Future’s recent project, ‘Mixtape Pluto’ with ‘Plan A,’ as both albums came out on the same day. On TikTok, creator @jbryce made multiple videos on both of these albums and said ‘Plan A’ was a better drop than ‘Mixtape Pluto’ and that ‘Plan A’ has “virtually no misses.” ‘Mixtape Pluto,’ in his opinion, had “a lot of skips” and “it just gets repetitive and it’s just boring.” Although this is just one opinion, it is similar to many opinions on the topic across different social media platforms.
One of my favorite reviews I’ve seen was from @Kingmilmiceus on Twitch, whose content mainly consists of reacting to music and new albums that come out. In this particular stream, he and two of his friends were immersed in each song while reacting to ‘Plan A,’ and put great input between each song. When talking about the third song,“120,” he said “I feel like this one fits into the two bangers that came out of ‘Taste’ and ‘Bad Time’… I feel like ‘120’ takes nothing away from it.” He also commented on the Don Toliver feature, calling it “a great piece of the project,” and said “I feel like we needed Don Toliver and Lil Tecca more than I thought we needed it.” The last song he made comments on that really stood out to me was “Flowers” where he told his viewers “you have to listen to this album start to finish.” He finished the stream saying the album is “overwhelmingly good” and that “Tecca did it again.”
If you are a rap fan you need to give “Plan A” a listen. In my opinion, it is one of the most consistent albums I’ve ever listened to. This album has no misses and never loses its flow from start to finish. It’s smooth and flows through your ears. From the lyrics to the transitions to the overall structure of each track, it is worth your time. The transitions make you want to listen to the album five times over. In my opinion, this is Lil Tecca’s best project.
