The Sunrise Movement and the Proletariat Culture Club are two new movements that have come to Princess Anne recently.
The Sunrise Movement is a climate action group that has been on the rise across the United States, and has a new chapter at Princess Anne. Run mainly by Faith Qin, a senior, and Haneeta Parakala-Jain, a sophomore, the Sunrise Movement hopes to bring awareness and answers to the Global Warming crisis and other climate crises in our area.
Qin and the others in the Sunrise Movement advocate for the Green New Deal (Sunrise Movement), which would introduce more environmental protection regulation and introduce thousands of new jobs for Americans, and push for many political leaders to recognize climate change as a problem that needs to be fixed quickly.
“We believe in a world with clean air, clean water, and a shot at a livable future for all, regardless of your skin color or zip code,” The Sunrise Movement states on their website.
The Sunrise Movement is a nationwide movement, but the chapters rarely interact with each other. However, the chapter at PA does have some help from the outside.
“We have a sentor that has been helping other chapters in Virginia for some time,” Qin said, “She’s currently in Chicago right now, but we basically do weekly, bi-weekly meetings with her, and she helps us with funding, general meetings, flyers, and how to go about financing.”
The PA chapter of the Sunrise movement is still in the building process, and is currently deliberating whether their focus should be limited to Princess Anne or to be expanded across the city. Specifically, there are more “people at Ocean Lakes as well who would like to join, and our school is, compared to other Virginian schools, quite small,” Qin stated.
For the upcoming year, Qin has been focusing on setting up the chapter’s foundation and setting club bylaws in place to get it ready for the next generation of leaders. Specifically, Qin is looking for leaders who share her love and respect for the environment and a drive to put an end to rapid climate change. “Even though I’m not going to be here next year,” Qin said, “[The Sunrise Movement] will still grow on its own.”
Qin is hopeful about the future, and doesn’t want to stop fighting for a better climate. “The work that you do is vital and still important,” she wants everyone who fights with her to know, “And there are people that need this type of work and to fight against what you see is wrong in the world, so don’t lose hope.”
The Sunrise movement is accepting new members, and encourages anyone interested to join. The sign up link can be found here.
The Proletariat Culture Club is a new political and educational group with Adin Pricer as the primary chairman and founder. The PCC is mainly focused on the teachings of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and other leaders and philosophers who contributed to the modern Communist movement.
There are no other chapters of the Proletariat Culture Club, but Pricer has been talking with people from other schools across Virginia and plans on traveling to Slovenia, which formerly was a part of Yugoslavia, and other places in Eastern Europe to develop more of a sense of the international Communist movement.
There were ten people at the Proletariat Culture Club’s first interest meeting, but Pricer explained that “half of the people were out of town or had another mandatory meeting.” Currently, Pricer documents members through social media and group chats like the group’s Signal, where he posts updates periodically. He further said that there were “barriers which made it hard to count the numbers” and that it was too soon to tell how large the group would come to be, as it was still in its infancy.
As for his goals for this chapter, however, Pricer believes that the meetings themselves are the most important thing to focus on right now. He believes that these general meetings will set the tone of the group itself, and that consistent attendance is vital.
Pricer said he had been drafting his plan for the group since 2023, with the primary planning period in the 2024-2025 school year and the first meeting occurring in early 2025. “Going back into September, when I revamped this idea, it was primarily the Black Panther Party led by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale that inspired me.”
However, Pricer doesn’t see himself as the chairman for long. “initially, just to oversee and make sure everything’s going in the right direction. But other than that, there’s no motivation or inspiration for that [remaining chairman].”
The Proletariat Culture Club’s primary purposes, however, are to teach and discuss the values of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism, to bring about more political education and heighten political consciousness, and to encourage student unity, regardless of background.
“The group,” Pricer emphasizes, “is for anyone at any political level.” The group is partisan with a lean towards Marxist fundamentals, but it is not a requirement to be a Marxist in order to join. “This is only an educational organization.”
