The PA Theatre program placed third in the Virginia Theater Association (VTA) Conference competition with its production of Wiley and the Hairy Man, performed on Thursday, Oct. 22 and again on Sunday, Oct. 25.

The play stars senior Annie Fick who plays Wiley, a boy who lives in the woods, and junior Shannon Hughes as his/her mother.

When asked about taking on the role of a boy, Fick said, “It wasn’t hard because I just tried to act like my little brothers and throw myself all over the place and be really big and whiny with my actions.”

Fick wasn’t the only one who enjoyed a victory this past weekend. The rest of the PAHS Theater Department was ecstatic to find out that it had placed 3rd out of 50 schools competing in VTA.

Wiley and the Hairy Man is a play about a young boy, Wiley, who attempts to conquer his fears and trick the giant hairy man who ate his father so that he will no longer appear in his dreams. Senior directors Hanna Kiryluk and Brittany Steffens explained that the hardest part of putting on the show was “limited rehearsal time.” Because of everyone’s busy schedules, “Rehearsals could only be held in class once a week and after school,” said Kiryluk.

Steffens went on to say that her favorite part of directing was “being able to create an artistic picture from the script and the cast members.”

Kiryluk added, “It’s really cool to watch the show and be able to say something like, ‘Hey I came up with the idea to have Wiley say the line like that.’”

Senior Rowan Robinson, a member of the ensemble, recalled how tough it was in rehearsal because the ensemble was the backbone of the show. Robinson said, “Without the ensemble, there wouldn’t be a show,” while explaining the job of the actors to morph into different shapes and objects to interact with the cast and pose as the background.

The show will be performed at PA in January in the Winter One Acts, and will compete in the VHSL One Acts competition later in the year.
