Music to PA’s Ears

Toby Scales, Staff Writer

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said, “Music is the universal language of mankind.” Music has had a place in society since society came to be, and more often than not you’ll meet someone who cannot live without it. But what is the most popular genre at PA? Is it rap, rock, pop? Students at PA were offered a survey on their favorite artists, pieces, and styles and here are the results.

The students’ answers were mostly mixed. Each submission had its own thing to say about the music the individual enjoyed. 27 out of the 95 surveys indicated that rap music was the most popular choice. R&B and rock came in as second and third place respectively. Surprisingly, most of the respondents were freshmen; 47 students in the class of 2026 took the time to respond to the survey.

Out of all the many artists listed in the form, Childish Gambino, Bad Bunny, and Deftones were mentioned the most. Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is a rapper and comedian best known for his work on the show “Community”, and his albums “Awaken, My Love!” and “Because the Internet”. He has won several awards for his efforts, including two Golden Globes, five Grammys, two Emmys, and many more.

Puerto Rican rap artist Bad Bunny is well known for his features on songs like “I Like It” by Cardi B and “MIA” by Drake. His interesting style of rapping and relatable themes in his songs create a connection between the artist and the listener that draws them in. He has earned three Grammys, four Latin Grammys, and eight Billboard awards as of 2023.

Third, the alternative metal band Deftones, which started in the late 80s and took off in the ’90s and early 2000’s are often credited with driving a tonal shift in the genre at the time. Lead singer Chino Moreno’s heavy melodic voice alongside thrashing guitars that drone in the listener’s ears create an atmosphere of dark, secluded energy. They are revered as pioneers in the rock scene for the time period and were called “the metal Radiohead” by NME.

In the end, this survey proves the diversity of the music tastes of students at PA. Each individual has their own preferences for music that gives them comfort and relaxation. Music itself has a big influence on the students of the school. Earbuds are often considered a “must-have” to make it through most classes and days at school, just to listen to music and tune out the world.
