Welcome back to It’s Time to Celebrate! I can’t believe it’s already the end of the month, but I am excited to look back on another month of holidays! This whole month has felt like one big holiday with seven days off of school. Let’s look back at all of the days we have gotten off from school for “No-school November!”
The first day of school students got off this month was Friday the third, for the last day of the quarter, which I think we can celebrate, marking a fourth of the year already gone by–and this school year has definitely gone by quickly. I can’t believe that we started all the way back in August!
VBCPS took mercy on the students this month by giving us the following Monday off as a staff day, as Election Day was that Tuesday. I definitely appreciate this choice in creating a five-day weekend. Last year, I was able to go on vacation with my family during this “fall break,” and I think it’s a great time for people to travel when it’s not as busy during Thanksgiving or Winter Break. Then, after two days of school, we got that Friday off for Veteran’s Day.
Later for Thanksgiving Break, students and staff got another five-day weekend, with the Wednesday before Thanksgiving now as a full holiday where the day has usually been adjusted dismissal in the past. Speaking of Thanksgiving, let me give my opinion on the biggest holiday of this month.
As I’ve gotten older, I think I’ve appreciated coming together with family more than food. I love all of the foods that you get to eat on the day of Thanksgiving, but I’m not really a fan of them the days after when they sit in the fridge as leftovers. My favorite Thanksgiving food would probably have to be mashed potatoes, but only the ones that my mom makes.
I usually do two Thanksgivings, one with my dad’s whole family, usually for lunch, and then with my aunt, uncle, and cousins on my mom’s side for dinner. My cousins and I have started a tradition where we make gingerbread houses after we eat Thanksgiving dinner, kicking off our celebrations of Christmas. While we’re on the subject of Christmas, If you celebrate it, I definitely think you cannot celebrate Christmas before Thanksgiving, or maybe even before December. If you start decorating and listening to Christmas music in November, you’ll be tired of it by the time the actual holiday arrives, or at least that’s what I usually feel like.
But enough about Christmas; I will talk about it way more next month, so I will see you then and have a good time during your holidays!
