What Happens

Delaney Brenner, Staff Writer

What happens

If I’m not good enough

What happens

If I trip and fall and can’t do it all

What happens

If I don’t reach my goals

If I get rejected

If I can’t live up to the expectations

What happens

If the façade slips and you see

How I’m really doing

What happens

If the grades plummet

If the work piles up

And I sink

Down

     Down

               Down

What happens

If the dreams get too big

And the hope gets too small

What happens

If the fearless little girl

Gets lost in a tornado of her own ambition

What happens

If the insecurities keep flowing

And the pressure keeps growing

And time isn’t slowing

But I have to keep going

What happens

If the gifted kid with stars in their eyes

Gets burnt out

The stars snuffed out

By life

By the robotic churning

The always yearning

The never learning

That this is it

This monotonous day

It might go away

But tomorrow

Glorious tomorrow

Is the same

Always the same

What happens

If I’m ready to break

If I make a mistake

If my heart starts to ache

If I can’t stay awake

If I’m really a fake

What happens

If it never gets better

What happens

If the weight only gets heavier

What happens

If you’re up on that ledge

Yes right at the edge

But you made a pledge

What happens

What happens

What happens
