On the corner of Haygood and Independence, a newly reopened Colattao Coffee House has flourished in its newly expanded environment. The café has taken over the building next door, formerly a Ynot Italian Delivery, expanding their previous, somewhat cramped space, highlighting the growth from when they first opened two years ago.
I visited the café the second week after its reopening on a Saturday, and the line was flowing out the door, though it did move pretty fast. Even a month after their reopening, the line was just as long, with their weekends seeming like their busiest days.
Colattao is a mash of the Spanish words “colao,” meaning brew, and “tostao,” or roast/toast.
The Colombian and Dominican-owned coffee house offers a variety of delicacies, including pastries, sandwiches, and of course, their drinks.
Some of the most intriguing drinks to me are the Tiramisu and the Spiced Caramel Apple Latte (a seasonal drink). However, on my trip to the café, I ordered the Hot Maple Honey Matcha. As an avid matcha consumer, I enjoyed the drink, especially the sweeter touch added to the traditionally nutty taste. The latte art and the garnish complemented the blue and white china that the café serves all items that are ordered for eating or drinking in.
As for food, I couldn’t choose just one item, so I ordered both the Triple Chocolate Muffin and the Monté Cristo. I should have asked for the muffin to be heated up, as it was at room temperature when I ate it, but other than that, it was large and delicious. The Monté Cristo exceeded my expectations, having been made fresh and taking longer than the muffin to be served. It melted in my mouth, and paired with my matcha, I was thoroughly satisfied.
Despite the larger space of the new store compared to its old layout, the atmosphere is just as cozy. There were more tables and chairs inside and outside, as well as a fireplace that divides a small portion of the restaurant with armchairs situated on both sides. Their outdoor area has completely expanded, now featuring a small but spacious nook with plants decorating the outdoors.
I recommend Colattao as a local alternative to Starbucks, with higher-quality options for about the same price. The staff were welcoming and positive, as well as extremely helpful when it came to questions about the menu. The café is closed on Mondays, so be wary if you want to go during the week. For students who live near the Oceanfront, a new location is on the way to Hilltop. I hope everyone visits and can enjoy the Colattao experience.
